Witnessing Autumn
Each year, when the shadows have become longer and sounds have become crisper in the cooler air and I can feel the onset of autumn, I promise myself that I will watch for the leaves to change. Promise that I will pay attention as they begin their progression towards the wondeful hues between gold and crimson. As the green starts to slowly fade, I take note. I tell myself that it will be soon and that I need to watch. And then, one morning I will wake up and the leaves of the tree framed in my window will greet me with a yellow brighter than the sunrise. Again, I will have failed at being autumn's witness.
